 옛날 옛날에 아주 위대한 서커스 곡예사들이 있었습니다.

한명은 어떤 자물쇠라도 뚝딱 열고 나올수 있는 탈출 마술사

또 한명은 하늘을 슝 날아오르는 우아한 공중곡예사

두 사람은 사랑에 바져 결혼을 하게 되었습니다.

둘은 눈이 휘둥그레질만큼 놀라운 묘기를 펼쳐보였고

세상 사람들은 아주 멀리서도 찾아왔습니다

왕 여왕 유명인사 우주 비행사들까지

 

곡예사들의 재주는 위대했지만 둘의 사랑은 더욱 위대했습니다.

그 한없이 깊은 사랑에

고양이들은 녹아내리듯 갸르릉거렸고

강아지들은 환희에 찬 눈물을 뚝뚝 흘렸습니다.

둘은 마을 언저리에 예쁘고 고즈넉한 집으로 이사를 왔습니다.

저녁에는 산책을 하며 밤공기를 즐겼죠.

매일밤 마을 아이들은 잔뜩 부푼 마음으로

곡예사가 늘 들고다니는 빛나는 하얀 스카프가 펄럭이길 기다렸습니다.

둘이 지나갈때 보여줘! 보여줘! 라고 외치면

아이들만을 위한 눈부시고 화려한 쇼가 시작되었죠. 

 

물론 둘은 서로를 몹시 사랑했고 아주 유명했으며 모두에게 사랑을 받았지만

남모르는 슬픔이 있었습니다.

우린 모든걸 전부 가졌어요, 부인이 말했습니다.

우리가 원하는 단 한가지만 뺴고요.

우리에겐 아이가 없어요.

기다려요 내사랑, 남편이 말했습니다.

시간은 우리편이에요. 시간도 우리를 사랑한답니다.

 

하지만 그 누구도 시간을 다루거나 부릴 수는 없었습니다.

시간이 흘러 나이가 들었지만 여전히 아이는 생기지 않았습니다.

밤마다 둘은 커다랗고 텅빈 집에 흐르는 침묵의 소리에 귀를 기울이며

아이가 뛰노는 소리로 이 집이 가득 찬다면 얼마나 아름다울까 생각했죠

 

슬픔이 삼켜버린 둘은 갈수록 더 위험한 묘기에 심취하게 되었습니다.

다가갈수 없는 삶의 비극으로부터 어떻게든 달아나기 위해 몸부림치며!

그리하여 둘은 어떤 행성과 은하에서도 본 적 없는 최고로 위험한 묘기를 선보이게 됩니다.

MATILDA: Once upon a time...

 

The two greatest circus performers in the world, an escapologist, who could escape from any lock ever invented,

and an acrobat, who was so skilled, it seemed as if she could actually fly, fell in love and got married.

They performed some of the most incredible feats together anyone has ever seen.

And people would come from miles around, kings, queens, celebrities, and astronauts.

And, not just to see their skill, but their love for each other, which was so deep that it was said that

cats would purr as they passed them, and dogs would weep with joy.

They moved into a beautiful old house on the edge of town. And in the evenings,

they would walk and take the air. And each night, the children of the town would wait in anticipation,

hoping for a glimpse of the shiny white scarf that the acrobat always wore.

For then, they knew they had only to cry, "Tricks! Tricks!"

and the great performers would instantly oblige with the most spectacular show, just for them.

But, although they loved each other, although they were famous and everyone loved them, they were sad.

 

ACROBAT: We have everything...

 

MATILDA: "We have everything that the world has to offer," said the wife,

 

ESCAPOLOGIST: We have everything...

 

MATILDA: "But we do not have the one thing in the world we want most."

 

ACROBAT & ESCAPOLOGIST: But the one thing...

 

MATILDA: "We do not have a child."

 

ESCAPOLOGIST: Patience, my love...

 

MATILDA: "Patience, my love," the husband replied, "Time is on our side, even time loves us."

 

MRS. PHELPS: Oh, Matilda...

 

MATILDA: But time is the one thing no one is master of, and as time passed, and they grew quite old,

and still, they had no child. At night, they listened to the silence of their big, empty house,

and they would imagine how beautiful it would be if it was filled with the sounds of a child playing.

 

MRS. PHELPS: Oh! Matilda, this is very sad.

MATILDA: Do you want me to stop?

MRS. PHELPS: Don't you dare!

 

MATILDA: Their sadness overwhelmed them, and drew them on to evermore dangerous feats,

as their work became the only place they could escape the inescapable tragedy of their lives!

And so it was, they decided to perform the most dangerous feat ever known to man.

 

ESCAPOLOGIST (at the same time as Matilda) : It is called, The Burning Woman Hurling Through The Air

With Dynamite in Her Hair Over Sharks and Spiky Objects Caught By the Man Locked in the Cage,

and it is the most dangerous feat ever known to man!

 

MATILDA: "It is called," said the husband, announcing the event to the World Press,

who had gathered to listen with baited breath,

"The Burning Woman Hurling Through The Air With Dynamite in Her Hair Over Sharks and Spiky Objects

Caught By the Man Locked in the Cage, and it is the most dangerous feat ever known to man!"

 

ACROBAT (at the same time as Matilda): It is our destiny. It is worth the loneliness of life has led us.

 

MATILDA: "It is our destiny," said his wife, smiling sadly and slipping her hand into his,

"It is worth the loneliness of life has led us."
